UCU Statement of Faith

The purpose of this statement of faith is to outline the core beliefs held as Christians, so that what we mean in calling ourselves a Christian house may be clear. However, residents of the University Christian Union are united by their belief in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as their savior. Thus, UCU accepts Christians from a variety of denominations and enjoys the diversity of backgrounds that live at the house while holding fast to the fundamental beliefs below.

Inspiration and Authority of Scripture
We believe that the Old and New Testaments are the verbally inspired word of God and are without error as originally given. Infallible and God-breathed, they constitute the divine and only rule of Christian faith and practice. (Psalm 19; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21, Matthew 5:18; Colossians 3:16; John 16:12-13)

The Trinity
We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4, 2 Corinthians 13:14; Matthew 28:19; 1 John 5:6-8)

Fully God and Fully Man
We believe Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man.  He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man. (John 1:1-2; John 1:14; Luke 1:35)

Sinfulness of Man
We believe that man was created in the image of God; that he sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death, but also spiritual death which is separation from God; and that all human beings are born with a sinful nature. (Genesis 1:27, Romans 3:22-23Romans 12-21)

Salvation By Grace
Jesus died upon the cross, the Just for the unjust, as a substitutionary sacrifice, and all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood and resurrection from the dead. We believe in salvation and the gift of eternal life that comes through a personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 2:8-10; John 1:12; Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18-19; Romans 10:9)

The Resurrection
We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord and His ascension into Heaven and in His present life and ministry there for us as High Priest and Advocate. (1 Peter 1:3, 1 Corinthians 15:21, Luke 24:6-7, Acts 1:9-10)

The Power of the Holy Spirit
We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.  The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and is sent to indwell, guide, teach, empower the believer, and convict the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. (John 14:26, 1 Corinthians 6:19, John 16:13, 2 Peter 1:21)

The Great Commission
We believe that Christ calls all who follow Him to be committed to reaching the unsaved with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. (Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15, John 14:6, 1 Peter 3:15)

Return of Christ to Rule, Reign, and Judge
We believe in the blessed hope, the personal and imminent return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We believe that there will be a bodily resurrection of the just and of the unjust; for the former, a resurrection unto life; for the latter, a resurrection unto judgment. (1 Peter 4:5; Romans 14:9; 2 Timothy 4:1; Revelation 19:15-16)
